The International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics (Metamaterials) series of events brings together and continues the traditions of the highly successful series of International Conferences on Complex Media and Metamaterials (Bianisotropics) and Rome International Workshops on Metamaterials and Special Materials for Electromagnetic Applications and Telecommunications. International Conferences on Complex Media and Metamaterials had eleven editions, with the names "Chiral", "Bi-isotropics", or "Bianisotropics", reflecting the developments in the field of artificial electromagnetic materials.
The first meeting on novel microwave materials was organized by Ari Sihvola in Espoo, Finland, in February 1993. In December 1993, that was followed by a seminar in Gomel, Belarus, hosted by Igor Semchenko and Anatoly Serdyukov.
For a long time, the series of conferences on complex electromagnetic materials was managed by the International Bianisotropics Conference Committee (IBCC), until the series merged with the new series of congresses on metamaterials (2007). More information about events in these series can be found here.
